George White's Children
Recorded by Dave Grey

Private George White came back from the war
but our eyes were all closed and nobody saw
except the grandchildren from behind a closed door
just like their parents before them.

His children were singers, dancers, and such
but the life that was theirs melted under his touch
and its other men now that bear the hate
Private George White used to create.

Sing me a reason, sing me a rhyme
tell me why these things must be
Maybe the people, perhaps the time
I only know I want kids to grow up to be free.

They say that he died in 65'
well I know that he left at least four shattered lives
He's under the earth and now resting well
while his family continue in their living hell.

For all of George White's children have grown
they're older now with kids of their own
and the great-grand children are running from home
just like their parents before them.

Sing me a reason, sing me a rhyme
tell me why these things must be.
Maybe the people, perhaps the time
I only know I want kids to grow up to be free.

No one can tell how George White died
none of his family were there by his side.
For he taught them to run and he taught them to hide
and George was a very good teacher.

Now it's just a story but the meaning is clear
if you've got loved ones and you want them near
teach them to love don't teach them to fear
just like their parents before them.

Sing me a reason, sing me a rhyme
tell me why these things must be
maybe the people, perhaps the time
I only know I want kids to grow up to be free.

Private George White came back from the war
now what kind of freedom was he fighting for?
